What Is a Mobile App Privacy Policy and Why Is It Required?
A mobile app privacy policy is a legal document that explains what data your app collects from users, how that data is used, who it is shared with, and how users can request deletion of their data. Both Apple and Google require every app that collects personal information to link to a hosted privacy policy before it can be approved.
App Store Privacy Policy Requirements (iOS)
Apple's App Store Review Guidelines require a privacy policy URL in App Store Connect for any app that:
- Collects user data (name, email, device identifiers, location)
- Uses third-party analytics or crash reporting (Firebase, Mixpanel, Sentry)
- Integrates advertising SDKs (AdMob, Meta Audience Network)
- Requires user account creation
- Is directed at children under 13

Google Play Data Safety Requirements (Android)
Google Play's Data Safety section (launched 2022) requires developers to declare:

Which SDKs Need a Privacy Policy Disclosure?
Any third-party SDK that receives user or device data has to appear in your privacy policy and in your App Store privacy label and Google Play Data Safety form — with the same answers in all three. Google explicitly rejects apps where the Data Safety form and the policy disagree. The most common SDKs that need a disclosure:

Third-Party AI and LLM Disclosure (New in 2026)
If your app sends any user content to a third-party AI model — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or an open model hosted by another provider — Apple's updated Guideline 5.1.2 expects you to name the specific provider (not "AI partners" as a vague category) and obtain explicit consent before the first request. Apps using generic AI language are being rejected. Your privacy policy should state which provider receives data, what is sent, whether it is used for training, and how a user can opt out. Can ChatGPT Write Your App Privacy Policy?
It can produce a draft, but app reviewers reject LLM-written policies often for predictable reasons: the model invents clauses, gets SDK vendor names or data practices wrong, and — most importantly — it cannot give you a hosted URL to paste into App Store Connect and Google Play Console. Privacy Policy Rejections: Guideline 5.1.1 and 3.1.2
Two recurring App Store rejections relate to the privacy policy:
- Guideline 5.1.1 — the policy URL is missing, returns an error, sits behind a login wall, or does not actually describe the data your app collects. A hosted, reachable, accurate page fixes this.
- Guideline 3.1.2 — for auto-renewing subscriptions, functional links to both a privacy policy and a Terms of Use (EULA) must appear in the app binary and in the App Store description.
