What Is a Mobile App Privacy Policy and Why Is It Required?
A mobile app privacy policy is a legal document that explains what data your app collects from users, how that data is used, who it is shared with, and how users can request deletion of their data. Both Apple and Google require every app that collects personal information to link to a hosted privacy policy before it can be approved.
App Store Privacy Policy Requirements (iOS)
Apple's App Store Review Guidelines require a privacy policy URL in App Store Connect for any app that:
- Collects user data (name, email, device identifiers, location)
- Uses third-party analytics or crash reporting (Firebase, Mixpanel, Sentry)
- Integrates advertising SDKs (AdMob, Meta Audience Network)
- Requires user account creation
- Is directed at children under 13
As of iOS 15, Apple also requires a Privacy Nutrition Label in App Store Connect declaring all data types collected and how they are used. Our generator covers both requirements in one step.
Google Play Data Safety Requirements (Android)
Google Play's Data Safety section (launched 2022) requires developers to declare:
- Which data types are collected (personal info, location, contacts, etc.)
- Whether data is shared with third parties
- Whether data collection is optional or required
- Whether users can request deletion of their data
A privacy policy URL must be provided in both the Data Safety form and the store listing. Apps without a valid, reachable URL are rejected or removed from Play.
What GDPR and CCPA Require for Apps
If any of your users are in the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies β regardless of where your company is based. GDPR requires apps to disclose the legal basis for data processing, data retention periods, and users' rights (access, correction, deletion). The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) adds similar requirements for California residents, including the right to opt out of data sale.
Our free privacy policy generator produces language that covers these frameworks, giving you a compliant starting point in under 60 seconds. For apps with complex data flows, consult a legal professional.
